Clearing Up the Murky Walls of Social Media

As smart as human beings are known to be, they remain pretty far from being perfect. The famous Big Tech group is no longer running the show, and Meta’s recent move does a lot to prove the same.

Amidst the extensive scrutiny it has been receiving as of late, Meta is making another attempt at cracking into the regulators’ good books. In a recent announcement, the social media giant announced an important Community Feedback Policy update, which focuses rather heavily on getting rid of fake reviews. According to certain reports, the platform will take stringent action against any manipulation of reviews through incentivization, irrelevant comments, graphic content, and even spam. Like in other areas, Meta will rely upon machine learning technology to ensure proper enforcement at every step along the way. However, considering these systems require a bit of time to learn new policies, the company has also encouraged users to report suspicious reviews whenever they come across one.

“We create and update all of our policies in line with the industry and technology as it evolves and we design our policies to keep misleading, false and abusive content off our platforms,” Meta notes. “While we know our work is never done, we are committed to making our technologies a trusted place for our community.”

The policy update interestingly comes after Facebook removed over a whopping 16,000 groups last year for trading fake reviews. The discovery led to the introduction of many new automated detection procedures. Furthermore, it also resulted in a stricter overall approach, an approach which has been all about keeping a serious track of the offenders and handing out permanent bans to all those users who pick up multiple violations.
